The games of the mind

The mind can be a tricky thing!
We tend to think that everything we see around us is existent and solidly ‘out here’. In other words real. Everything we look at, observe and experience should make sense and be understandable, if we think about it.

But this is not always the case.
For example have a look at the diagram below…

A three pronged fork, an oblong piece of metal with three holes and three nuts to hold the whole thing together, so what?!

But, hang on, take another look!

At first glance you’ll probably see nothing wrong but imagine trying to put the items together!?!

This is a classic optical illusion, your mind will try to make it look as if it is real and can be put together, which is why you probably didn’t notice anything wrong at first glance, but it’s impossible!

And, just as the mind will struggle to make sense of something that does not fit, so it will also try to make sense of your experiences, even IF the result makes no sense!

For example, you’ll be amazed at how many children, of divorced parents, actually believe that the divorce was their fault! They may even have been told by a parent, in a fit of anger, that it WAS their fault. You can’t blame the parent as they are probably going through hell at the time, but the child will believe it. And they may well hold onto that belief into adulthood, even though they know it makes no sense! It’s the sort of ‘belief system’ a therapist often encounters, something that 'kind of' makes sense to the client, but really makes no sense. But because they’ve always believed it, they will hold on to the idea, even if it’s making their own life hell.

This is what Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy can do, help you let go of ideas that are affecting your life, but from which you feel you cannot escape.

The truth is you can!
